The PRT Programme

Welcome to the UK’s PRT Programme!

The ‘PRT’ (post-registration training) programme is the UK’s graduate education programme for recently-qualified chiropractors.

The aim of the PRT programme, under the guidance of a mentor, is to help ensure a smooth transition from the undergraduate setting to autonomous professional practice in the clinical setting and is designed to be helpful and supportive.

Take a minute to read about the PRT Programme, its benefits and how it works.

Hear from our PRT candidates

  • PRT allows you to transition well through the general observations and continued learning to gain more confidence in treatments, it cemented skills to ensure that I am a safe practitioner.

  • The connection it provides with other chiropractors in the same position academically to myself made me more confident in my own abilities hearing about other people’s experiences and gave me ideas about how I want to go forward in the profession.

  • PRT was incredibly useful to speak to other new grads who were going through the same thing. We were able to talk about our problems and our victories.

  • PRT is for new graduates to do during their first year in practice and is run for the UK chiropractic profession by the Royal College of Chiropractors (RCC).
  • PRT enables newly qualified chiropractors to work in regular contact with experienced colleagues who are trained for the role of trainer/mentor. It provides further structured learning at workshops, facilitated by experienced PRT tutors, as part of a framework which supports the ongoing development of professionalism.
  • PRT helps you keep in touch with your peers and the wider chiropractic community.
  • Participation in the PRT programme is the most straightforward and cost-effective way to satisfy all your GCC CPD obligations (including directed CPD requirements) in the first year or two of practice.
  • The PRT programme is normally completed within 12 months.
  • The Professional Associations have long recognised the value of the PRT, and the largest associations actively encourage participation. The BCA, MCA and UCA recommend the PRT programme, and the BCA require successful completion of the PRT before assigning full membership. You can do the PRT regardless of which Professional Association you join.
  • While participating in PRT, graduates are registered as Provisional members of the RCC.

The PRT programme comprises:

  • Practice-based learning (regular discussions and observations with your trainer)
  • Experiential learning (discussions and observations of other professionals)
  • Participation in live, online, interactive workshops and CPD with your peers (facilitated by experienced PRT tutors)
  • Reflection and development planning (identifying and addressing your own learning needs)
  • Online learning modules and resources covering each of the 6 areas of clinical governance that the GCC requires recent graduates to include within their CPD.

Each graduate is partnered with a trainer who acts as a mentor with whom they have regular contact. It is preferable, but not essential, for a trainer to work in the same practice as a new graduate. It is acceptable for a graduate to participate even where they and the trainer work in separate locations, different practices and even when a graduate is setting up a separate clinic.

Registered Provisional members can access their PRT resources by logging into My Portal.

While payment of the PRT fee is the responsibility of the graduate, some clinics choose to pay for all or part of this for their associates.

RCC Provisional membership and participation in the PRT postgraduate training programme go hand-in-hand. RCC Provisional members fee is £250 which can be paid in 12 monthly payments of £20.83 per month. Whilst this is a reduced rate to the full RCC membership fee, Provisional members can access all the RCC membership benefits, all the CPD hours required by the GCC in the first year, including the Clinical Governance ‘directed-CPD’, plus online learning modules in business management.

For graduates who successfully complete PRT, RCC Licentiate membership is awarded with the post-nominal letters, LRCC, and the RCC Diploma in Chiropractic (DC).

Once you are a Licentiate you are able to progress your membership to full Member (MRCC) and Fellow (FRCC).
